Quick answer

Do you need an FXS or FXO gateway?

Choose FXS for analog equipment

An FXS gateway provides dial tone and ringing voltage to analog phones, fax machines, modems, lift phones, door phones or legacy PBX extensions, then connects them to a SIP based IP PBX or hosted VoIP service.

Choose FXO for analog telephone lines

An FXO gateway receives analog PSTN lines from a telecom operator and presents them as SIP trunks to Grandstream UCM, 3CX or another compatible IP PBX.

Simple rule: the gateway port connects to the opposite interface. An analog telephone plugs into FXS. A telephone company analog line plugs into FXO. PRI, E1, GSM and native SIP trunks need different interfaces.

FXS versus FXO gateway comparison

The labels describe how a port behaves electrically and operationally. Choosing by connector shape alone is a common and costly mistake.

Industry use cases

Where analog gateways still create value

The best migration is not always a rip and replace project. Gateways let organizations modernize call control while retaining useful analog assets.

Hotels & Hospitality

Connect large numbers of guest room phones to an IP PBX while preserving existing room cabling. Use FXO where analog outside lines must remain available.

Healthcare

Integrate ward phones, reception sets, hotlines, selected fax workflows and approved emergency analog devices into a centrally managed voice platform.

Education

Retain classroom, hostel, security desk and administration analog phones across schools, universities and distributed campuses.

Manufacturing

Bridge rugged analog phones, guard posts, plant hotlines and legacy extensions while the core PBX and office users move to SIP.

Banking & Finance

Support controlled migrations of legacy voice endpoints and operator lines, subject to the organization's recording, security and compliance design.

Retail Chains

Connect branch analog devices to centralized or hosted communications and retain local analog lines where operationally required.

Public Sector

Phase the migration of established analog extensions across offices without replacing every handset, cable and endpoint at once.

Property & Facilities

Integrate lift phones, gate intercoms, reception phones and emergency lines after confirming electrical and regulatory compatibility.

What TekkPak checks before deployment

A correct port count is only the beginning. Our planning process considers the full analog, SIP, network and support environment.

Discovery

Identify every analog device or trunk, active concurrency, caller ID requirements, fax usage, emergency lines and future capacity.

Compatibility

Confirm the IP PBX, SIP service, operator signalling, codecs, dial plan, DTMF, country tones and specialist device requirements.

Infrastructure

Review Ethernet, VLANs, QoS, UPS, earthing, surge protection, patching, cable length, rack space and remote access policy.

Commissioning

Configure, label, test inbound and outbound calls, validate failover where applicable, document the solution and train administrators.

Frequently asked questions

Grandstream FXS and FXO gateway FAQs

What is the difference between an FXS and FXO gateway?
An FXS gateway supplies dial tone, line voltage and ringing to analog devices such as phones and fax machines. An FXO gateway receives an analog PSTN line and converts it into SIP connectivity for an IP PBX. Analog devices connect to FXS ports; analog telephone lines connect to FXO ports.
Which Grandstream gateway should I use for analog phones?
For 1 to 8 analog endpoints, the HT801 v2, HT802 v2, HT812 v2, HT814 v2 or HT818 v2 may fit. For 16, 24, 32 or 48 FXS ports, consider the corresponding GXW4200 v2 model. Final selection should allow for growth and confirm device compatibility.
Which Grandstream gateway connects analog PSTN lines to an IP PBX?
The Grandstream HT841 accepts four analog FXO lines and the HT881 accepts eight, with one FXS port also included. Legacy GXW4104 and GXW4108 requirements should be checked for current availability and compatibility before procurement.
Can Grandstream gateways work with 3CX and Grandstream UCM?
Grandstream gateways use SIP and are designed for SIP based environments. They can be deployed with Grandstream UCM and compatible third party platforms such as 3CX, subject to supported firmware, templates, SIP configuration and interoperability testing.
Can I use an FXS gateway for fax over IP?
Many Grandstream FXS models support T.38 fax. Successful faxing still depends on the SIP provider, PBX, codec and network path. Where fax is business critical, test the full path before rollout and retain an approved contingency.
Can an FXO gateway connect a PRI, E1 or GSM line?
No. An FXO gateway is for analog telephone lines. PRI or E1 trunks require a digital gateway such as an appropriate GXW4500 series model, while GSM or cellular trunks require a compatible GSM or LTE gateway. A native SIP trunk normally connects directly to the IP PBX.
Does TekkPak provide installation outside Lahore?
Yes. TekkPak serves businesses across Pakistan, with solution design and support coordinated from Lahore. Delivery and implementation arrangements depend on the site, project scope and availability of local infrastructure.
What information is needed for a gateway quotation?
Share the number and type of analog devices or lines, current PBX model, required simultaneous calls, site locations, fax and caller ID needs, available network and power infrastructure, preferred IP PBX and future expansion estimate.
